The Power of Diversity

Linda Zhou, Alice Wei Zhao, Lori Ying, Angela Yu-Yun Yeung, Lynnelle Lin Ye, Kevin Young Xu, Benjamin Chang Sun, Jane Yoonhae Suh, Katheryn Cheng Shi, Sunanda Sharma, Sarine Gayaneh Shahmirian, Arjun Ranganath Puranik, Raman Venkat Nelakant, Akhil Mathew, Paul Masih Das, David Chienyun Liu, Elisa Bisi Lin, Yifan Li, Lanair Amaad Lett, Ruoyi Jiang, Otana Agape Jakpor, Peter Danming Hu, Yale Wang Fan, Yuval Yaacov Calev, Levent Alpoge, John Vincenzo Capodilupo and Namrata Anand.

All these kids are American high school students. They were the majority of the 40 finalists in the 2010 Intel Science Talent Search, which, through a national contest, identifies and honors the top math and science high school students in America, based on their solutions to scientific problems.

Indeed, if you need any more convincing about the virtues of immigration, just come to the Intel science finals. I am a pro-immigration fanatic. I think keeping a constant flow of legal immigrants into our country — whether they wear blue collars or lab coats — is the key to keeping us ahead of China. Because when you mix all of these energetic, high-aspiring people with a democratic system and free markets, magic happens. If we hope to keep that magic, we need immigration reform that guarantees that we will always attract and retain, in an orderly fashion, the world’s first-round aspirational and intellectual draft choices.

Mosque Gets a Woman's Touch

For centuries, Istanbul was the seat of the caliphate, the capital of the Islamic world and home to hundreds of magnificent old mosques. At the Sakirin Mosque, we see a radical exception: it is designed by a woman. Known for designing hotels and bars, Zeynep Fadillioglu puts a contemporary spin on an ancient art.

Remember Halabja

The streets were strewn with corpses. People had been killed instantaneously by chemicals in the midst of the ordinary acts of everyday life. Babies still sucked their mothers’ breasts. Children held their parents’ hands, frozen to the spot like a still from a motion picture. In the space of a few hours 5,000 people had died. The 3,200 who no longer had families were buried in a mass grave.

The thrilling Bhagavad Gita

“Whenever, O descendant of Bharata, righteousness declines and unrighteousness prevails, I manifest Myself. For the protection of the righteous and the destruction of the wicked, and for the establishment of religion, I come into being from age to age.”

This verse from sacred Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, outlines a fundamental spiritual truth. It states the time of the appearance of a Divine Author (call them Prophets, Manifestations, Messengers) [Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness prevails], explains the purpose of the Manifestations of God [For the protection of the righteous and the destruction of the wicked and for the establishment of religion], and the concept of Progressive Revelation [I come into being from age to age.]

Not only must Hinduism be considered Divine Revelation equal in rank to Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, and the Baha’i Faith, but it must also be given credit as one of the first to describe the process of Progressive Revelation. It should under no circumstances be considered merely a cultural adventure of the Indian Peninsula. The Gita demonstrates spiritual truth. Read it.

Infographic: Iran's political system

Noone in the west has quite understood how Iran works. Not only is it unique in structure, but it is also in a constant state of fluctuation as every mullah and their mother struggles for power. Recent analysis shows a rise in power of the Revolutionary Guards which seems to be upsetting the established religious leaders.

Nicolas Rapp, art director of the Associated Press, simplifies the complex political structure of the Islamic Republic in this infographic. Unfortunately he omits the Revolutionary Guard Corps altogether, so think of them as being somewhere around the Supreme Leader and above media, justice, economics, and every other type of structure and system. Go read more about this, it's fascinating.

It's no secret that the distribution of wealth is inequitable in the United States across racial, regional, and socio-economic groups. The Modern Seeker of Truth

A few weeks back i found these two highly amusing mock-up ‘magazine covers’ on theonion.com. One reads: ‘Eastern Religions: Which one is best for your abs?’ and the other: ‘Finding a Religion that doesn’t disrupt your current lifestyle’.

...and yet again they describe so vividly what society’s view on religion is.
